Dior Addict Jelly Lip Pens Review + Swatches

dior jelly lip pen review

As soon as the Summer collections are out from each beauty brand, I usually end up with a list as long as my arm, filled with items that I'm lusting after. Dior are always a brand that present a collection that has every beauty addict drooling and as I'm sure you'll agree, the Birds of Paradise collection was no different. This time round, it was the Dior Jelly Lip Pens that topped my to-buy digest, as Dior lip products are some of my all-time favourites. I wasn't disappointed, either.

The balmy formula of the lip products make them so comfortable to wear; a total pleasure. With any high shine lip product, I'm always wary of them feeling sticky, or too wet. These lip pens are neither, feeling light and nourishing on the lips. During wear, the lips remain feeling hydrated and aren't at all dried out. Considering they're sheer and glossy, they last well. Obviously, they don't stick around for as long as a highly pigmented, matte lipstick, but I'm impressed with their staying power. If you want them to last throughout the day though, be prepared to touch up every so often, to keep the colour looking as vibrant as possible.

As they're sold as a jelly balm, you wouldn't expect them to be too highly pigmented, but I was surprised by how colourful they were. Carioca especially, can be built up to give a bright, almost neon effect. They provide a very even finish on the lips, if they are well conditioned to begin with and don't go on all patchy, like some other balmy formulations can. Both the shades that I purchased have a high amount of shimmer running through them, which gives them a really shiny look, helping to give the illusion of a fuller pout. When it comes to lip products, I'm a sucker for any that smell good and these do exactly that, having a subtle, exotic, fruity fragrance to them, that isn't too artificial. Delicious!

516 Copacabana is a cool-toned, brown, nude shade that contains a hefty heap of silver shimmer. As my lips are quite pigmented naturally, this shade is quite subtle on me, but I love it. I don't like to say it, but it's a cliched 'my lips but better' colour, that I reach for on a very regular basis. So easy to wear, it looks great with everything and gives a polished finish to any makeup look. My beloved MAC lipsticks have definitely been having a rest recently, thanks to this Dior lip number.

Carioca
- For me, this shade is the star of the show. As soon as I spotted this orangey, coral shade, I immediately fell in love and had to pick it up. Shot through with multi-tonal shimmer that reflects purple, pink and golden flecks, it's just so unusual and unique. When I think of my perfect Summer lip colour, this is it! With a quick sweep of the pen, this shade can be toned down, adding a hint of a tint, or with a generous slick, the intensity can be ramped up. When I'm wearing this shade, I can't stop looking in a mirror, as it's just beautiful and I always get so many compliments. It brings a tonne of light to the face and instantly makes me look more awake. If you want to venture out into bright lip colours, but don't want to jump in at the deep end, this is the perfect product for you. Definitely check this out at your local Dior counter, soon!

Compared to the luxe decadence of the usual Dior lipstick packaging, these lip pens fall a bit short, looking more cheap, than chic. But, it's what's inside that counts, right? Not when we're paying top dollar (£19 for 2.75g), no! The pencil format seems to be extremely popular with both high-end and drugstore brands alike, nowadays, what with the Clinique chubby sticks and the Nars lip pencils. The pencil makes it easy to apply, being able to follow the outline of the lips without too much thinking. Effortless, I've even slicked a few top-up layers on, without a mirror. Being able to twist up the lip colour, rather than having to sharpen it, when it's running low, makes it totally hassle-free. But, once the point has worn down and become more blunt, precision accuracy isn't as great, but we're talking about applying lip colour here, not major-risk surgery.

Aside from the bland packaging, the only other thing disappointing about these Dior beauties, is that there are only a total of four shades to choose from. Being limited edition, I'm worried that these wonders will sadly be retired when Summer is over, so I may just have to stock up! If you fancy any of the line up, then get purchasing pretty swiftly, or you may be left in the lurch!
