Autumn Makeup Essentials: Bold, Statement Lip Colours

autumn makeup essentials bold statement lip colour swatches review red berry deep pink tones

Personally, I like to wear a statement lip all year round, but A/W is when they become a serious business. Whether you like berry, magenta or vermilion hues, there are enough bold lip options out there to suit every taste. Here are just a few of my favourites.

soap and glory sexy mother pucker gloss stick plum jam swatch review

Glossy, sheer formulas make brighter options easy to wear. Soap & Glory's Sexy Mother Pucker Gloss Sticks add a hint of a tint, that can be worn day or night. The rich, balmy texture plumps your pout with a glazed, bee-stung effect. Plus, that formula helps to protect from any cold, windy weather. Plum Jam is a bright, berry tone. If you want to try wearing bolder shades, but aren't brave enough to go all-out yet, this is a great product to build your confidence. No matter how much you slick on, the colour won't build up to be much stronger than my swatch below. Having a vanilla scent, they're a joy to apply, although the fragrance may be too sweet for some.

ysl rouge volupte sheer candy lipstick 5 mouthwatering berry swatch review

Another purple tone, YSL's Rouge Volupte Sheer Candy Lipstick in Mouthwatering Berry, is a step up in terms of intensity. On the lips, this formula feels so light and hydrating. As you apply straight from the bullet, the balmy stick melts onto the lips. As it's not at all thick or sticky, the glossy finish has more of a wet-look, watery shine to it. Once the luster has worn off, a touch of even colour remains. So, if you don't have time to touch up often throughout the day, you don't need to worry about unflattering lines around the lips ruining your look. The sweet, fruity scent that the Sheer Candy lipsticks have is mouthwatering and you get a tasty treat whenever you lick your lips. Just to clarify, I do not recommend eating lip products. Of course, being YSL, the packaging is a work of art and that does hike the price up to a guilt-inducing point.

mac craving lipstick amplified creme swatch review

MAC Craving Amplified Creme Lipstick is a deep, rosy, plum shade. If you want a plum lip, without going too vampy, this is definitely one to check out next time you pass a counter. Highly pigmented, the amplified creme formula is opaque in one swipe and refuses to fade throughout the day. Thick and rich, the satin finish is so long-lasting. Needing minimal touch-ups, this is a dependable choice if you've got a busy day or night ahead. That distinguishable, vanilla scent of MAC lipsticks isn't my cup of tea, but it doesn't linger for too long.

revlon colorburst lacquer balm 125 flirtatious charmeuse swatch review

Really want to make a statement? The Revlon Colorburst Lacquer Balm in 125 Flirtatious Charmeuse could be the one for you. A vivid fuchsia shot through with a dash of dark pink shimmer, this may not stick to the traditional, autumn colour palette. But, it makes a change from predictable hues. IRL, the colour isn't quite as neon as it looks in the swatch below and is definitely more autumn appropriate. These chubby sticks pack a punch in the pigment department, without the need to spend hours layering individual coats. As the crayon-esque bullet has a point to it, you can get a precise line around the lips, if you don't want to use a separate liner. Described as a balm, they're moisturising and are comfortable to wear all day, but they're nowhere near as nourishing as the Soap & Glory sticks. As I'm sure you can imagine, this will stain, although it should come off easily with an oil-based cleanser or makeup remover. Personally, I love the fresh minty fragrance of them, which is a nice change from standard, sickly scents.

estee lauder pure color vivid shine lipstick forbidden apple swatch review

I had to include a deep red in this post somewhere. Estee Lauder's Pure Color Lipstick in Forbidden Apple is one of my absolute favourites. There's a touch of silver and gold sparkles in this raspberry, red shade, which neutralise the undertone of the lipstick, making it flattering on all skins. The shimmer is only subtle, so there isn't a tacky, glitter-ball effect. Creamy in consistency, this lipstick goes on smoothly and isn't at all drying. Whilst it has a sheen, the finish isn't glossy. Long-lasting, this lipstick wears well for around four hours before you need to touch-up the colour. The delicious, fig fragrance of Estee Lauder lipsticks, is divine and encourages me re-apply way more often than I need to, just because I'm addicted to it.

maxfactor lipfinity lasting lip tint 06 royal plum swatch review

To ensure your pout paint stays in place all day, you could opt for a lip stain. Maxfactor's Lipfinity Lasting Lip Tints are a great, drugstore option. Stains can be drying, sucking all the moisture from your lips, but this water-based tint feels hydrating for a good, few hours. Once on, it will not budge, so there's no worry when eating, drinking, or smooching. If your lips have any dry, flakey patches on them, then the colour will cling to them and start to look blotchy throughout the day, so you have to make sure your lips are in good condition before you apply. The in-built pen nib makes application precise, but it can actually make the lips too sharp, in my opinion. I prefer to dab some of the stain in the center of my lips, before smudging it outwards, to try and get more of an effortless, 'just bitten' look. 06 Royal Plum is a deep, cherry colour which translates as a lot more red than it is in person, in my swatch below. This has a strong, cheap, pick 'n' mix scent to it, which I don't like, but it's bearable.
