P. Louise Tearproof & Cry Baby Mascara Reviews + Before/After Swatches
13:00Alice GraceP. Louise Cosmetics is a beauty brand famous for its dreamy, cutesy look, but don't let the saccharine packaging fool you into thinking their products are all style over substance or only suitable for teenagers. Although I've pared back my makeup routine and outgrown rainbow-inspired eyeshadow palettes as I've gotten older, I'm always intrigued to try different versions of the staples I'd never go without from brands that might not immediately catch my attention. One category that piqued my interest from P. Louise's extensive range was mascara. I have two of three formulations in her lash-enhancing lineup - Cry Baby Conditioning Mascara* and Tearproof Waterproof Mascara* - but how do they perform and compare?

P. Louise's Cry Baby Conditioning Mascara has a customisable formula that can give you a more natural or bolder finish depending on your preference, but it also does more than your average mascara. Infused with conditioning ingredients, including vitamin E, this mascara acts like a treatment, nourishing your lashes during wear to prevent breakage and promote healthy growth. If you're a serial false lash wearer or lash extension lover, this mascara has your back in terms of repair. The consistency of this mascara is creamy and buttery smooth, which helps the tapered bristle wand to easily glide over the lashes with every swipe. Natural bristle brushes tend to hold more mascara, but it's literally impossible to apply too much of this one as it builds perfectly with no clumps in sight, adding extra length and volume with each coat. Cry Baby can give you a soft, doe-eyed look with a quick slick or dramatic density when layered, so it's the formula I reach for most often as it's so versatile. Think fluffy, fanned out lashes. Due to the hydrating ingredients within the formula, it's comfortable to wear and doesn't dry down to the point that it flakes or starts to feel crispy.
P. Louise's Cry Baby Conditioning Mascara may not be as durable as their Tearproof offering, but the wear time is solid for a non-waterproof formula. Being water-dissolvable, this mascara removes really easily with even water alone, although I do always recommend double cleansing after wearing makeup anyway. If you're a fan of bedazzled makeup products, then you'll fall head over heels for the Cry Baby Mascara packaging. I was slightly hesitant when opening the box to reveal a pink and silver glitter-covered mascara tube in case it left little glimmering flecks over everything, but I was pleasantly surprised to find there's no transfer at all. It may not be my favourite packaging design, but it's fun, the tube has a nice weight to it and the formula within makes up for it.
P. Louise's Tearproof Waterproof Mascara is the product you can rely on to keep your lashes looking great all day and night, even if you cry your eyes out! As the name would suggest, this mascara is meant to be smudge-proof, waterproof and should last for 24 hours. It's true. Tearproof's double-sided plastic wand features two different bristle lengths, with a shorter side for really getting into the root of the lashes and a longer arched side for evenly coating each lash to maximise lift. Just like Cry Baby, the gel emulsion formula has a slick consistency, but the wand holds significantly less product as the tube effectively removes any excess. As a result, the plastic prongs deposit only a small amount of mascara at a time when combing through the lashes to give a really precise and defined finish. The amount of length that this mascara gives is incredible, although you have to be fairly quick with application as lashes can start to look spidery if you continue to layer over previous coats which have started to dry. Whilst you can achieve a more intense result with the Tearproof Mascara, I personally prefer reserving it for softer, 'clean girl' looks as it really gives a wide awake appearance but doesn't fill my lashes out as much as Cry Baby.
The best thing about P. Louise's Tearproof Waterproof Mascara, though, is how remarkably it lasts. Impressively, there's no hint of even a tiny smudge after a vigorous eye rubbing and lashes look untouched even after tears have been shed (I chopped an onion to test the brand's claims!), so this would be a great choice for anyone who usually struggles with mascara staying put. It will not budge. You'd think such a long-lasting mascara would be difficult to remove, but the Tearproof Waterproof Mascara utilises tubing technology and is therefore much easier to take off than other waterproof formulations. Simply soak two cotton pads in either warm water or eye makeup remover and then hold them against your eyes for a couple of minutes. In no time, the mascara 'tubes' slide right off without the need for any tugging or rubbing, which makes it an ideal option for those with sensitive eyes. The pink and gold packaging with ribbon design is much more my taste, and the compact tube feels really great quality.
Both mascaras cost £15, which sits somewhere between high-street and high-end pricing. P Louise's Tearproof Waterproof Mascara comes in three shades (black, rich brown or soft brown) for you to change up your look, whilst her Cry Baby Conditioning Mascara is available in just traditional black. Personally, I love both mascaras for different occasions - Cry Baby for soft or full glam days and Tearproof for no-makeup makeup looks or emotional special occasions. Considering how impressed I am by both mascara formulations, I will definitely look past the barbie-esque branding and try more from P. Louise Cosmetics in future. It just goes to show - never judge a book by its cover!
