4 Favourite Winter Lip Product Pairings: Rhode, Charlotte Tilbury, VIEVE & more
14:23Alice Grace
Lip products are my kryptonite, but my penchant for lipsticks, glosses, balms, stains, tints and liners was getting so out of hand that I recently decided to take drastic measures. Would I manage to use up every single lip product in my collection before it went off? No. And so I embarked on a long overdue, savage declutter of my makeup drawers, binned any lipsticks that were wayyyy out of date (oops), chucked out some questionable trend-led purchases and rediscovered some oldies but goodies. I may have repurchased a couple of must-haves that were past their best and added one new but totally essential (wink wink) addition to my stash since, but I'm now left with a collection full of absolute favourites that I know I'll finish. Since this lip product purge, I've been rotating between four of my most-loved winter lip combinations, so I thought I'd share them with you in case you're looking for some inspiration!

Charlotte Tilbury Wedding Belles Matte Revolution Lipstick with Pillow Talk Lip Cheat
I know that glossy lips are all the rage at the moment, but I'm still drawn to sheen-free formulas when going out-out as they require far fewer touchups. Only a few brands offer matte lipsticks that I can bear to wear regularly, and Charlotte Tilbury's Matte Revolution Lipsticks continue to reign supreme as my all-time favourite. Despite having a velvety matte finish and feel and the colour lasting with minimal touch-ups required, they never leave my lips in a sorry state after hours of wear. The texture is so creamy, smooth and easy to apply that the Matte Revolution formula never dries down to the point that it's uncomfortable or irritating. At the moment, I'm obsessed with the aptly-named shade that I actually wore on my wedding day - Wedding Belles, a stunning dusky rose shade. This is my favourite lipstick of all time, not only for obvious reasons, but because the warmer pink hue is just so flattering and seems to pull every makeup look together perfectly. The depth of colour build-ability makes it a great choice for any occasion, both day or night, too.
My liner of choice when wearing Wedding Belles is the iconic Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lip Liner in Pillow Talk. All you need to know is, yes, it lives up to the hype. The Lip Cheat formula is pigmented, has a smooth putty-like texture and is much more long-lasting than other lipliners. Pillow Talk (the original shade) does pull slightly cooler on my skin tone, but the pinky-nude shade is universally-flattering and really helps to give the illusion of a plumper pout when contouring the lips. Charlotte Tilbury also offers her iconic Pillow Talk lipliner in multiple depths to suit all skin-tones, so you're sure to find your ideal shade if the original is too light or dark for you.

Rhode pbj Peptide Lip Tint with MAC Subculture Lip Pencil
Taking a texture turn, I've been obsessed with wearing the Rhode Peptide Lip Tint in pbj paired with the classic MAC Subculture Lip Pencil when I've wanted a sultry yet softer look. Rhode/Hailey Bieber can do no wrong when it comes to creating products that allow us mere mortals to emulate her off-duty model, clean girl aesthetic so well. The Peptide Lip Tint formula gives your lips the brand's iconic glazed finish - hydrated and juicy with a glassy shine - all with a translucent wash of colour thrown in for good measure. Packed with shea butter, babassu oil and an anti-aging peptide, the lip tint cleverly combines skincare with makeup, so you're improving the health of your lips with every application. The super smooth, non-gritty texture leaves your pout feeling so nourished that it becomes addictive to wear. pbj is a delicious warm berry chocolate shade that's not too pink but not too brown. This chic colour is a little bit different than your average nude lip for this season, and it pairs so well with warmer makeup looks and cocoa-toned or burgundy outfits. You'd think that the lip tint wouldn't last well with it being so glossy, but the formula has quite a thick, plush consistency that sticks around for a good while. And once the shine has died down, a hint of just-bitten colour remains until you crave reapplication for that comforting, non-sticky feel.
MAC's Subculture Lip Pencil pairs perfectly with Rhode's pbj for daytime wear. It's what I describe as a barely there pink-beige shade, which makes it a great all-rounder for those with paler natural lips as it can be used to even out and enhance your lip shape without looking obvious. Subculture is basically an exact match for my natural lip colour, so it adds the perfect amount of definition to neaten up the edges of my lips without leaving a stark line behind - just what I want when opting for a fresher glossy vibe. MAC's Lip Pencils offer a very matte finish and are quite dry and firm in texture to begin with, so it does mean that prepping the pencil before application is necessary to achieve the best colour payoff possible. Quickly warming the lipliner up on the back of your hand after freshly sharpening prior to use will give you a much smoother application, and then it will last beautifully.

Hourglass If Only Confession Lipstick with Pippa of London Bianna Lipliner
The Hourglass Confession Ultra-Slim High Intensity Lipstick in If Only has been my lipstick of choice when I've wanted something a little bolder but don't fancy red. I bought my first stick of If Only when the Confession Lipsticks initially launched, and I've repurchased the shade multiple times since (along with a couple of others); that's how much I adore them. I'm just going to say it - these lipsticks have one of the best consistencies I've ever tried. I just can't get over their incredibly creamy, silky smooth texture. They have one of the most long-lasting satin formulas I've experienced, and the colour payoff is incredible. One swipe and lips are 100% saturated with opaque colour and an ultra moisturised satin finish. The Hourglass Confession Lipstick formula is so comfortable that I can easily forget I'm wearing one, only to check in a mirror later and find the colour looking as flawless as ever despite eating and drinking. They definitely live up to the high intensity claim, that's for sure. If Only is a warm, mid-toned plum shade that is so brightening. As soon as I slick it on, I instantly look as though I've slept for a week. Of course, the shade and formula is the biggest draw to this lipstick, but I also love the ingenious packaging. The refillable pointed pen casing makes it one of the easiest lipsticks to carry around and apply. If I'm feeling brave or just very desperate, I can just about trust myself to achieve the perfect application without a mirror with this one, sans any disastrous mistakes. The rounded nib hugs the contours of the lips with ease and allows you to cover them in colour quickly.
I pair Hourglass If Only with the Pippa of London Defining Lip Liner in Bianna*. This liner, which is infused with lots of skin-loving ingredients, has quite a thick, gel-like texture that really grips the lips for maximum coverage but doesn't tug at the skin as you apply. It perfectly seals the lip edge to prevent any lip product bleeding or feathering and never smudges or leaves a jagged edge behind. You'd think all that might give it a 'heavy' feel on the lips, but no, it continues to feel weightless no matter how many layers you apply. Plus, the deep, neutral pink colour is the perfect shade to create precise definition and subtle shadow when overlining for a fuller lip look.

Charlotte Tilbury Super Fabulous Matte Revolution Lipstick with VIEVE Velvet Sands Modern Lip Definer
Lastly, we have another Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution creation in the form of Super Fabulous from the makeup maestro's Super Nudes range. This is a deep, rich rosewood brown shade, which gives serious 90s vibes. Super Fabulous can appear rather intimidating on first swatch for those of us with fair skin, but it's a really versatile shade. You can layer multiple swipes of this lipstick to create a totally opaque, deep, dramatic look or simply dab the bullet across your lips until you're happy with the payoff before blending with your finger to diffuse the intensity somewhat. I love this technique for daytime wear as it gives more of a relaxed, blurred, pillowy lip finish and prevents the lipstick from looking too overdone. Darker matte lipsticks can often make lips look thinner than they are, which can be aging, but never fear. I'm not sure what sorcery Charlotte Tilbury uses to create her Matte Revolution Lipsticks, but the formula offers a luminous matte result instead of a totally flat finish, so lips appear much fuller and moisturised rather than slim and shrivelled.
My go-to liner when reaching for Charlotte Tilbury Super Fabulous is the VIEVE Modern Lip Definer in Velvet Sands. This neutral beige lipliner is my ultimate favourite to complement more peach/brown-toned nude lip products. The formula is super creamy and slick, which makes the lipliner effortless to apply. Although very little pressure is required to achieve a strongly defined line, the Modern Lip Definers don't melt enough on contact with the skin that they smudge or transfer easily. Although many lipliners are often too dry or chalky to use all over the lips, VIEVE's softer Modern Lip Definer formula makes them a great, comfortable option for use as a priming base. Although the lipliners leave behind a noticeable tackiness when used in this way, this helps anything applied on top to grip the lips even more for extra longevity. Of course, the super luxe, vintage branding of the Modern Lip Definers scores them bonus points, but Jamie Genevieve's lipliners would remain an ever present feature in my collection with even basic packaging. You must give them a try if you haven't already!
